Nick Saban and Steve Spurrier are two college football icons, and Saban recently honored his coaching counterpart. Spurrier was honored at the inaugural Nick Saban Legacy Award ceremony, and Saban reminisced on what it was like to coach against him.
Spurrier, who won the Heisman Trophy as a player at Florida, was known for having prolific offenses throughout his coaching career. At the ceremony, Saban said that defending Spurrier’s offenses was never a fun task because he never knew what was coming next. Beyond the on-field battles, Saban also admired the way Spurrier was able to make connections with his team.
“Steve was always sort of an icon in terms of great scheme offensively, really great play-caller, really hard to defend because he was really kind of unpredictable,” Saban said. “Not unpredictable in a bad way but always very well-prepared. His offensive teams were very well-coached, really hard to defend what he did.
