UCF football coach Gus Malzahn was involved in a car accident Monday night in Auburn, Alabama, according to a report Tuesday afternoon by Joe Kepner of WFTV. Kepner reported that Malzahn is OK and that he called UCF athletic director Terry Mohajir to let him know what happened. No other details on the accident have been reported.
Malzahn, 56, is set to begin his second season leading the UCF program after an eight-year stint as head coach at Auburn. The Knights finished 9-4 last season (6-3 in American Athletic Conference) and defeated the in-state rival Florida Gators, 29-17, in the Gasparilla Bowl in Tampa, Florida, this past December.
Monday’s reported accident was not the first scare for the Malzahn family this offseason. In January, Malzahn announced that his wife, Kristi, was hospitalized with an undisclosed infection. She was released in February, and Malzahn opened up on the severity of his wife’s condition in an interview with the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel last month.
“There were times I was scared to death I was going to lose her,” Malzahn said. “I kept praying and I knew others were praying, too. We were overwhelmed by family, friends and fans who were sending their prayers our way. I believe Kristi is with us today because of the power of prayer and, of course, the doctors and nurses at Orlando Health were amazing.”
